Congress to Embrace Role of Constructive Opposition in Parliament: Sachin Pilot

Congress leader Sachin Pilot emphasised the need for checks and balances, stating that his party will serve as a constructive opposition in Parliament. Speaking at the Young Indians Largest Conclave Entrepreneurship and Financial Renaissance, Pilot, who is also the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, highlighted the significance of the recent election results.

Congresss Constructive Role in Parliament

Pilot noted that the election outcomes were a clear indication that no party should take the electorate for granted. He remarked, "The ultimate outcome is that we have a coalition government in New Delhi. People did not give any party a clear mandate. While we do have a government, the key takeaway from this election is that you cannot take the electorate for granted."

Constructive Opposition and Accountability

Pilot stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in governance. He said, "Checks and balances are crucial. There must be a sense of accountability, the ability to ask questions, transparency, and respect for the institutions we have built over 70 years." He reiterated that Congress aims to foster positivity as a constructive opposition.

Addressing the changing landscape in Parliament, Pilot expressed hope that the message of accountability would be understood. He stated, "The fact is that the landscape in Parliament has changed, and I hope this message is understood. We Congress are here as a constructive opposition aiming to foster positivity."

Election Results and Public Sentiment

Referring to the election results, Pilot conveyed that they reflect the public's desires and aspirations. He said, "The collective message is very clear that one has to be cognizant of the desires, the aspirations, the needs, and the requirements of people at large. You can get a majority, but the single message is that things should not be as they were."

Pilot underscored that a robust democracy requires both a strong opposition and an accountable government. He added, "A free India, a strong opposition, an accountable government is what makes a robust democracy. A healthy democratic republic is one where the opposition is as important as the government and that message has been conveyed."

Personal Reflections on Political Journey

Responding to a question about his position within Congress despite his understanding of youth mindsets, Pilot expressed gratitude towards his party leadership. He acknowledged their role in his political journey by saying, "What you see of me today is the result of my 20-25 years in politics, not because of some great talent. There are many people more talented than me who haven't had the same opportunities."

Pilot credited his party for providing him with opportunities throughout his career. He said, "I got this chance because my party allowed me to become an MP at 26. I never forget that it was my party that provided me with the platform." He further elaborated on his various roles within Congress over 25 years.

Pilot concluded by reflecting on his extensive experience within Congress. He mentioned having held multiple positions including MP, minister, Rajasthan party president, deputy chief minister, and MLA. He added, "In my party, we have a very robust system of leadership and roles. I have been an MP, a minister, Rajasthan party president, a deputy chief minister, and I am an MLA today. So in 25 years, I have received more from the party than I could have ever asked for."
