Potential Candidature of Achu Oomen for Kottayam Constituency Stirs Political Scene
Senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan hinted at the possibility of Achu Oomen, daughter of former CM, contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Kottayam. However, final decision will be made by the party.
Senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, on Saturday, indicated that his party may not object if Achu Oommen, daughter of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, is chosen as the candidate for Kottayam Lok Sabha constituency in the forthcoming general elections. The statement came in response to media queries about possible plans to field Achu Oommen in the 2024 Parliamentary elections.
Party Decision on Candidature

"I cannot say much but everything will be decided by the party. Achu Oommen is a smart individual and she is like a daughter to all of us. But the candidature is something which will be decided by the party. There is a process for this," said Radhakrishnan, emphasising that any decision regarding candidacy would adhere to established procedures within their political outfit.
No Opposition Expected from Party Leaders
In response to questions about potential opposition from within the Congress party itself against fielding family members of late leaders, Radhakrishnan asserted that none of their party leaders would have any objections. He also pointed out an alleged double standard by CPIM during recent electoral events.
"It was the CPIM which raised such allegations during the Puthuppally by-election. But at the same time, in Tripura, they fielded the son of a deceased leader for the by-poll," he stated.
Achu Oommen's Political Intentions Unclear
Despite these discussions surrounding her potential political role, Achu Oommen has previously expressed disinterest towards entering politics herself; however she did actively campaign for her brother Chandy Oommen during recent local elections.
Achu Oommen who resides abroad had told media outlets that she does not intend to enter politics; yet, she was seen extensively campaigning for her brother Chandy Oommen during the Puthuppally by-election. Her active involvement in this campaign has sparked speculation about her possible future role within the party, despite her earlier statements to the contrary.
In conclusion, while Achu Oommen's potential candidacy is a topic of discussion and speculation among media and political circles, any decision regarding this will be made according to established procedures within the Congress party. It remains to be seen whether Achu Oommen herself will express interest in entering politics or if she will continue to support from behind the scenes.
