Congress Election Committee Plans for West Bengal Lok Sabha Seats

New Delhi, Mar 19 - The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) convened in the national capital on Tuesday, focusing on the strategic selection of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The committee, under the leadership of party president Mallikarjun Kharge, engaged in discussions regarding potential candidates from various states including Karnataka, Telangana, Chandigarh, and West Bengal. Additionally, the assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim were also on the agenda.

Congress Plans West Bengal Seats

Amidst the deliberations, particular attention was given to West Bengal due to its potential alliance with the Left parties. The committee is considering re-nominating its two incumbent Lok Sabha members from West Bengal - Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Berhampore and Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury from Maldaha Dakshin. This decision underscores the party's strategy to retain its stronghold in these constituencies.

The meeting saw the participation of several key figures within the Congress party, including former president Sonia Gandhi and general secretary KC Venugopal. Notably absent was Rahul Gandhi, a member of the CEC. The discussions extended to seats in north and central West Bengal, evaluating which constituencies would be most advantageous for either the Congress or the Left based on their winnability.

So far, the Congress has publicized a list of 82 candidates for the seven-phase Lok Sabha polls set to commence on April 19. The anticipation builds as sources hint at the imminent release of a third list of candidates. This strategic move is part of Congress's broader effort to solidify its electoral presence across multiple states.

The CEC's meeting is a critical step in finalizing the party's contenders for what promises to be a highly contested election. With discussions on candidates for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat slated for Wednesday, the Congress party is meticulously planning its approach to maximize electoral success. The outcome of these deliberations will significantly influence the party's prospects in the forthcoming elections.
