Congress Calls For Discussion In Lok Sabha Over Deportation Of Indian Nationals From US

On Thursday, Congress moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, calling for a discussion on the deportation of more than 100 Indian nationals by the United States.

"The deportations of over 100 Indian nationals, primarily from Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat, by the United States government have been carried out under conditions that are deeply distressing and humiliating. The deported individuals include 25 women, 12 minors, and 79 men. Reports have surfaced of these individuals being shackled and treated in a degraded manner during their deportation process, raising serious concerns about their human dignity and rights," stated the motion, moved by Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi.

"This House must urgently address the issue to prevent further dehumanisation of our people and to uphold the dignity of every Indian, both at home and abroad," the motion further emphasised.

On Wednesday, a US C-17 military aircraft carrying 104 Indian immigrants landed in Amritsar.

It marked the first such deportation by the Donald Trump administration, which had pledged a crackdown on illegal immigration after taking office last month.

According to sources cited by PTI, the deportees included 33 individuals each from Haryana and Gujarat, 30 from Punjab, three each from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh.

The US Air Force's C-17 Globemaster aircraft landed at Amritsar airport at 1:55 pm. The deportations come just days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Washington DC for wide-ranging discussions with President Trump.

Upon arrival, the deportees were questioned inside the airport terminal by various government agencies, including the Punjab Police and state and central intelligence agencies, to ascertain whether they had any criminal records.

At around 6:45 pm, the deportees from Punjab were transported to their hometowns in police vehicles after completing all necessary formalities.

Similarly, the illegal immigrants from Haryana were taken to their native places under the escort of the state police, sources reported.
