Congress Advocates for Unity; BJP Seeks Uniformity, Says Jairam Ramesh
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh emphasized the party's commitment to fostering unity in contrast to the BJP's pursuit of "artificial uniformity" during a media briefing at Congress Bhavan in Dimapur. Ramesh, who was in Nagaland to support Congress candidate S Supongmeren Jamir, highlighted the significance of the 2024 elections as a pivotal moment for India, framing it as a clash between the values of unity and uniformity.

Ramesh critiqued the BJP's approach towards national integration, accusing it of attempting to enforce a homogenized identity across India's diverse cultural landscape. He underscored the importance of Article 371 A, introduced in 1963 during Nagaland's formation, which grants special provisions to the state. The senior Congress leader expressed concerns over its potential vulnerability following the BJP's revocation of Article 370, which had accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
The Congress leader also brought attention to the unresolved framework agreement signed between the Government of India and NSCN-IM in 2015. Despite promises of a solution during assembly polls by the BJP, Ramesh lamented the prevailing confusion and accused the BJP of deceiving Nagaland's populace.
Questioning the democratic integrity of having all 60 MLAs join the government in Nagaland, Ramesh positioned the Indian National Congress as the sole defender of democracy in both Nagaland and India. He stressed that the upcoming election is crucial for democracy's future in the country.
Ramesh further articulated the Congress party's vision for equitable development across all regions of Nagaland, addressing political aspirations and correcting developmental imbalances. He criticized current governance for neglecting certain regions, advocating for a balanced approach to regional development both within states and nationwide.
Dismissing the notion of elections as a mere beauty contest for selecting prime ministers, Ramesh emphasized the contest of ideologies, party programs, and collective decision-making processes in Indian democracy. He expressed confidence in securing a clear majority for Congress and its allies INDIA in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
In his discourse, Ramesh presented a narrative that not only critiqued the current political landscape but also offered a vision for an inclusive and democratically vibrant India. As the nation inches closer to crucial elections, his remarks underscore the ideological battle lines being drawn between competing visions for India's future.
