Team India Celebrates Champions Trophy Semifinal Win; Shama Mohamed Praises Virat Kohli's Performance

Congress leader Shama Mohamed recently praised India's cricket team for their victory over Australia in the Champions Trophy semifinal. She highlighted Virat Kohli's impressive innings, which led India to a four-wicket win. Kohli's 84 runs helped India reach their fifth final in this tournament. The final match will now take place in Dubai, moving from its original location in Lahore.

Shama Mohamed Celebrates Team Indias Victory

Mohamed expressed her congratulations on X, stating, "Congratulations to Team India for their spectacular victory against Australia in the semifinals of the Champions Trophy 2025. A big shout out to Virat Kohli for scoring 84 and to be the first player to score 1000 runs in ICC knock out tournaments!"

Controversy Surrounding Social Media Posts

However, Mohamed's earlier social media posts fat-shaming Indian captain Rohit Sharma caused significant controversy. These remarks upset many cricket fans and drew criticism from various quarters, including her own party and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who described them as deeply shameful.

The backlash extended to BJP leaders, who accused Mohamed of trying to undermine the team's morale at a crucial time. Amit Malviya, the ruling party's social media head, alleged that her comments were a deliberate attempt to demoralise the team.

Congress Party's Response

The Congress party distanced itself from Mohamed's comments about Sharma. They clarified that her views did not represent the party's stance and emphasised their respect for sporting icons. Pawan Khera, head of Congress media and publicity department, stated that Mohamed was asked to delete her posts.

Mohamed defended her remarks as personal opinions and claimed they were blown out of proportion. She insisted she was only commenting on Sharma's fitness while expressing pride in his achievements.

Upcoming Final Match

India will face the winner of the second semifinal between South Africa and New Zealand, scheduled for Wednesday in Lahore. The final match is set for Sunday. This change in venue from Lahore to Dubai adds another layer of anticipation to the upcoming clash.

The Indian National Congress reiterated its admiration for sports figures and disapproval of any statements that could tarnish their legacy. Despite the controversy, India's focus remains on securing victory in the final match.
