Sri Lanka Army Commander Lt Gen BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo Meets Gen Upendra Dwivedi to Enhance Defence Ties

Lt Gen BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, recently met with Indian Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi. Their discussions focused on boosting defence cooperation and strengthening military ties between the two countries. The Indian Army shared this update on X, along with photos from their meeting.

Sri Lanka Army Commander Meets Gen Dwivedi

Lt Gen Rodrigo's official visit to India took place from June 11-14. This visit highlights ongoing efforts by both nations to deepen their defence partnership, as noted by the defence ministry on June 11. During his visit, Lt Gen Rodrigo attended the Passing Out Parade at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun as the Reviewing Officer.

Strengthening Defence Cooperation

The Indian Army's post stated, "India & Sri Lanka, Forging Stronger Bonds Lieutenant General BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo, Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, called on #GeneralUpendraDwivedi #COAS at the Army House. They engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral #DefenceCooperation, strengthening military-to-military ties and reaffirming their shared commitment to regional stability and global peace."

Lt Gen Rodrigo's presence at the IMA was significant as it marked a return to his alma mater. He was commissioned there in December 1990 as part of the 87th Course. His participation in the Passing Out Parade underscored his connection to the institution and its importance in his military career.

Celebrating New Officers

The Indian Army also highlighted Lt Gen Rodrigo's involvement in the Pipping Ceremony for newly commissioned officers following the Passing Out Parade. He personally pipped two Gentleman Cadets from Sri Lanka into Commissioned Officers. This ceremony emphasized the strong ties between India and Sri Lanka.

In another post, it was noted that Brigadier RMSP Rathnayake of the Sri Lanka Army pipped his son, Foreign Officer Cadet RMNL Rathnayake, into a Commissioned Officer role. The ceremony marked a milestone with 296 Sri Lankan Army Officers commissioned from IMA, showcasing India's commitment to fostering defence cooperation with friendly nations.

Lt Gen Rodrigo congratulated the new officers and their families, urging them to uphold their armies' traditions and strive for exemplary leadership. His words aimed to inspire these young officers as they embark on their military careers.

This visit and its associated events reflect the enduring relationship between India and Sri Lanka. Both countries continue to work towards enhancing their defence collaboration and maintaining regional stability through such engagements.
