Coimbatore activists attempt to send sanitary napkins to PM, get arrested
Protests over 12 per cent GST on sanitary aids are being held across the country
Six members of a youth organisation were arrested in Coimbatore for attempting to send sanitary napkins to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. To mark their protest against 12 per cent Goods and Services Tax on sanitary napkins, Puratchikara Ilaignar Munnani attempted to parcel napkins and courier it to the Prime Minister but were taken into custody.

Protesters, including three women, condemned the 12 per cent GST on sanitary napkins and attempted to courier napkins to the Prime Minister and emulate similar protest across the country. Members of the organisation gathered outside the head post office in Coimbatore on Friday shouting slogans and holding placards condemning taxation on sanitary aids.
"The central government exempted GST on many products that aren't essential but has implemented 12 per cent GST on sanitary napkins and 18 per cent GST on food for children. This, while pizza attracts just 5 per cent GST," the protesters told the media.
Protesters demanded a rollback of GST on sanitary napkins and urge the GST council to consider it during the next session. The protesters were taken into custody before they could courier sanitary napkins to complete their protest. Similar protests have taken place across the country condemning 12 per cent GST on sanitary aids.
