CBI files FIR against its former director Ranjit Sinha for influencing coal scam probe

The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a case against its former director Ranjit Sinha in the coal scam case. The CBI says that the case was filed after it had found that Sinha had met with accused linked to the coal scam.

It has further been alleged that Sinha had tried to influence the probe in the coal block scam.

It may be recalled that recently Attorney General of India, Mukul Rohatgi had told the Supreme Court that a panel appointed had indicated that Sinha had tried to scuttle the investigations. The panel had been appointed to probe whether Sinha had influenced the investigation into the coal scam or not.

The report of the panel headed by former CBI special director M L Sharma has found that the visitors' diary at Sinha's residence was genuine. The report is not conclusive, but it does indicate that Sinha met some people who are now accused in the coal scam, the AG had submitted.

A three-member SC bench, headed by Justice Madan B Lokur, had in January stated that it was "prima facie satisfied and convinced" that Sinha had abused his position and authority as CBI director.
