Germany's Ambassador Discusses Close Cooperation with MEA on Ariha's Foster Care Situation

Germany's Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, stated that German authorities are maintaining close communication with India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and relevant youth authorities. This is regarding the case of an Indian girl, Ariha, who has been in foster care in Germany. The ambassador addressed this during a press interaction at his residence, responding to questions about efforts to bring the three-year-old back to India.

Germany and MEA Collaborate on Ariha Case

Thane MP Naresh Mhaske mentioned in August that the MEA is actively working for Ariha's early return. Ariha, originally from Thane district, has been in foster care for over 36 months due to allegations of minor physical abuse. Her parents, Bhavesh and Dhara Shah, reside in Mira Bhayander, Thane district. The foreign minister informed the MP about ongoing efforts through a letter dated August 16.

Efforts and Communication

The ambassador highlighted the commitment of the foster parents to consider Ariha's cultural background. He expressed that discussions are ongoing to find a satisfactory solution for her future. "We have clearly a commitment by the foster parents to look into this cultural background," he said. The possibility of raising this issue at higher levels was also mentioned as a potential course of action.

During the media interaction, Ackermann noted that Germany's legal system allows youth authorities to operate independently without external orders. He explained that resolving such cases involves persuasion rather than directives. "Basically, in many, many ways it is a convincing exercise rather than a commanding exercise," he added.

Parental Visitation and Cultural Exposure

The ambassador shared progress made over recent months, including language training and cultural exposure for Ariha. Regular contact between Ariha and her parents has been established and is functioning well. "What we have achieved in the last couple of months is, I think, language training, in principle is there," Ackermann stated.

The media event took place ahead of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's visit to India. During his visit, Scholz will engage in extensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on various topics.

In response to parliamentary inquiries by Thane MP Naresh Mhaske, Foreign Minister Jaishankar detailed efforts made by his ministry. These efforts led to the German Youth Welfare Authorities deciding not to appeal court orders granting visitation rights to Ariha's parents.

The ambassador reiterated Germany's readiness to address the situation further if necessary. "So, it might be raised, it is a clear possibility that it might be raised and I think, my side, my government is prepared...," he remarked.

The ongoing dialogue between Indian and German authorities reflects a commitment to resolving Ariha's case amicably while respecting legal frameworks and cultural sensitivities.
