Clean Yamuna Drive Begins; Delhi LG VK Saxena Shares Videos, Shows Machines Deployed Near Banks

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Sunday shared a video of machines being deployed near the banks of the Yamuna river showing that rejuvenation work for the river's ecosystem has started. Cleaning Yamuna has been a long-time issue in the national capital and the BJP highlighted it as a poll promise too.

The video shows specialised equipment like trash skimmers, weed harvesters, and dredge utility crafts have been deployed in the river. These tools are crucial for removing debris and ensuring efficient cleaning. Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, has directed officials to expedite the process without delay.

Clean Yamuna Drive

Four-Phase Yamuna Cleaning Strategy

The cleaning operation follows a structured four-phase plan. Initially, waste and silt will be removed from the riverbed to clear accumulated debris. The second phase involves cleaning major drains such as Najafgarh and Supplementary drains, which significantly pollute the river. Monitoring existing sewage treatment plants (STPs) is also part of this strategy to ensure wastewater is treated effectively before entering the river.

To address a treatment shortfall of around 400 million gallons per day (MGD), new sewage treatment plants (STPs) and decentralised STPs (DSTPs) will be constructed under a time-bound plan. This expansion is essential for managing wastewater efficiently and reducing pollution levels in the Yamuna.

Strict Directives to Authorities Cleaning Yamuna

This ambitious project aims to clean the Yamuna within three years through coordinated efforts from various agencies. Involved organisations include the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Irrigation & Flood Control Department (I&FC), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and Environment Department.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has been tasked with closely monitoring industrial units. They must prevent untreated waste from being discharged into drains, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. High-level oversight will be maintained throughout this large-scale initiative
