TMC-BJP Supporters Clash in Cooch Behar Amid Rival Rallies

In a recent unsettling event in Dinhata, Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, tensions flared between supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday evening. The clash occurred shortly after a public meeting concluded by Union Minister of State for Home Nisith Pramanik and just as a rally led by State Minister Udayan Guha was about to commence in close proximity. This incident took place in the bustling Dinhata Bazar area around 8:30 pm.

Clash at Cooch Behar Rallies

According to reports, the conflict erupted when Pramanik, who is also the local BJP Member of Parliament, was departing from the venue after his meeting. At this juncture, it is alleged that stones were thrown at his convoy from the direction of the TMC rally site, which was located mere meters away. Pramanik conveyed to a Bengali news channel his dismay at the sudden attack, describing it as an undemocratic and violent act by TMC supporters.

In response to these allegations, Udayan Guha, the North Bengal Development Minister representing the TMC, refuted claims of initiating violence. Guha accused BJP supporters of instigating the altercation by throwing stones and shooting arrows towards the TMC rally, resulting in injuries among their ranks. He further accused Pramanik of inciting his followers to attack TMC supporters.

The confrontation did not spare law enforcement officials either, with several police personnel sustaining injuries while attempting to quell the violence between the two factions. Amidst these accusations and counter-accusations, Governor CV Ananda Bose has taken cognizance of the situation. A statement from Raj Bhavan highlighted that Governor Bose has requested a detailed report from the state's police chief regarding the veracity of these confrontations.

Furthermore, Governor Bose has taken proactive measures by submitting a list of habitual offenders, identified through the logsabha portal, to law enforcement. This step aims at implementing preventive actions to ensure such individuals do not hinder the conduct of free and fair elections in the region.

This incident underscores the volatile political climate in West Bengal, where clashes between political parties are not uncommon. The involvement of high-ranking officials from both TMC and BJP in this altercation has brought it into sharper focus, raising concerns about political harmony and public safety in the lead-up to elections.
