In a distressing turn of events in Odisha's Ganjam district, a clash between BJP workers and supporters of the ruling BJD led to the death of a BJP worker and injuries to seven others. The confrontation occurred in Sri Krushna Saranapur village under the jurisdiction of Khallikote police station on Wednesday night, reportedly over the issue of election poster placement. The police have arrested nine individuals in connection with the violence.

The situation escalated when police attempted to arrest those accused, leading to an attack by locals. A mob later congregated outside the police station, demanding the release of the detainees. To manage the crowd, law enforcement resorted to using tear gas shells and a mild lathi charge. This confrontation resulted in injuries to five police personnel. In response to the unrest, Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Meena announced the deployment of additional forces in the village and near the police station, alongside the imposition of prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC.

The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Dilip Kumar Pahana, who succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital. According to a preliminary investigation, both factions involved in the clash wielded sharp weapons. The injured are currently being treated at a state-run hospital, with their condition reported as stable.

The incident has sparked outrage among BJP workers, leading to allegations of vandalism against several vehicles near BJD MLA Suryamani Baidya's residence and road blockades near the police station. Protesters are calling for the arrest of MLA Baidya and her husband Daitary Behera.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned the violence, expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased and wishing a swift recovery for the injured. He emphasized that such acts of violence have no place in democracy or civil society and assured that the police would take stringent action against those responsible for this "heinous crime."

BJP President JP Nadda, during a roadshow in Bhubaneswar, remarked on the incident, stating that such occurrences should not happen. In light of these events, the Election Commission has decided to deploy an additional 2,000 central forces personnel in the district for upcoming elections. The electoral battle sees Baidya seeking re-election against BJP's Purna Chandra Sethi, a former MLA. Elections for both the Khallikote assembly seat and Aska Lok Sabha constituency are scheduled for May 20.
