CJI Sanjiv Khanna Orders Inquiry In Justice Yashwant Varma In Cash Row

The Supreme Court has formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court. This decision follows claims of a significant cash discovery at his residence. The panel, established by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, includes Justices Sheel Nagu, GS Sandhawalia, and Anu Sivaraman.

Justice Yashwant Varma, the second senior-most judge in the Delhi High Court, was appointed on October 11, 2021. The incident leading to these allegations occurred on March 14 when a fire broke out at his Lutyens Delhi home around 11:35 pm. Firefighters discovered the cash while extinguishing the blaze.

Supreme Court's Response

Following this incident, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna instructed an internal inquiry after receiving a report from Chief Justice D K Upadhyay of the Delhi High Court. Consequently, Justice Varma has been relieved of any judicial duties for the time being.

The event highlights the fire at Justice Varma's residence led to the discovery of a substantial amount of cash. This prompted the Supreme Court collegium, led by CJI Khanna, to consider transferring him to another high court.

Details of Allegations

The exact amount of money found remains undisclosed. However, its discovery has raised significant concerns within judicial circles. The committee's formation aims to ensure transparency and uphold judicial integrity amidst these serious allegations.
