CJI DY Chandrachud's Big Message For Probe Agencies

Addressing the 20th DP Kohli Memorial Lecture on CBI Raising Day, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud gave a big message to investigating agencies of the country. The CJI said agencies must only focus on national security and economic crimes against the nation.

"The CBI is being increasingly asked to delve into a diverse array of criminal cases beyond its role as an anti-corruption investigative agency. This places a huge responsibility on CBI to live up to its motto," said CJI Chandrachud. He added that "the premier investigative agencies have been spread too thin and they should only focus on cases that concern national security and crimes of economic offenses against the nation."

CJI also suggested digitizing the investigation process starting from the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) online, so that delays in the probe and process can be cut down.

"All arms of the criminal justice administration and all stakeholders including the FSLs must collaborate by holding workshops to help confront challenges we face," CJI further said.

CJI Chandrachud also highlighted the need for structural reforms in central agencies for early probes.

He also suggested that probe agencies should use Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the best outcome, which may prove to be a "game changer" that can revolutionize criminal justice. CJI further added that AI helps in data "with unprecedented accuracy".
