Coimbatore, Nov 22: A small private clinic opposite to Ramakrishna Hospital in Sidhapudur, Coimbatore witnessed a heartwarming farewell when thousands of people gathered to pay respect to their beloved '20 Rupees Doctor'.

Dr Balasubramaniam ran a clinic in the Sidhapudur area of Coimbatore, which he started after he was retired from Employee's State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).
Two years ago, Dr Balasubramaniam initially charged his patients a fee of merely Rs 2 which gradually increased over the year to Rs 10, finally amounting it to Rs 20. He never charged anything extra when providing his patients with injections and tablets. Also, he did not charge patients who visited him for follow-ups.
It is learnt that Dr Balasubramaniam had a cardiac arrest and died on Saturday. Even Sindhu, the grand daughter of Dr Balasubramaniam flew from Bangalore as many people called her up to ask about her grand father's demise.
On hearing about his death, the streets of Sidhapudur overflowed with people on Sunday morning who came to pay their respects to their philanthropic doctor. Outside his clinic, people were seen lined up to light candles and offer prayers, and to bid farewell to him when his body was brought to his clinic before being taken for cremation.
