Christmas Traditions: How Different Countries Celebrate The Season
Every year, Christmas is celebrated with much excitement and grandeur around the world. The holiday season is about to begin, and we eagerly await its arrival. Christmas is a time to celebrate togetherness, the joy of giving, and to end the year on a happy note while welcoming the new one. Different cultures celebrate the festive season in their own special ways, each with unique traditions that make the holiday even more magical. As we gear up to celebrate Christmas this year, the Hindustan Times shared a report showcasing different customs across the globe. Let's dive into it:
Hanging Calendars

In Germany, the tradition of Advent dates back to the 19th century. "Advent" means "coming," and it marks the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. What began as a way of counting down the days to Christmas has evolved over time. The idea was commercialised by Gerhard Lang, who made Advent calendars more festive by adding chocolates behind each door. Today, Germany is known for hanging giant Advent calendars on buildings, adding a special charm to the festive atmosphere.
Noche de las Velitas
On December 7, Colombia celebrates Noche de las Velitas, or the Night of the Little Candles. This tradition honours Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Colombians light millions of white and coloured candles, filling their homes and streets with a warm, festive glow. This marks the beginning of the holiday season in the country, filling the air with joy and excitement.
La Quema del Diablo
In Guatemala, La Quema del Diablo, meaning the "Burning of the Devil," is a unique and vibrant tradition. On December 7, people burn an effigy of the devil in order to cleanse their homes and lives of negativity, making way for good fortune and positive energy. The ritual is an important part of the Christmas celebrations, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
Dancing Around The Christmas Tree
In Denmark, families embrace a joyful tradition of dancing around the Christmas tree. Holding hands, they dance, sing, and laugh together before opening their Christmas presents. This fun and lively celebration adds a touch of magic and togetherness to the holiday spirit, making it a cherished moment for Danish families.
Visiting The Cemetery
In Finland, Christmas Eve holds a special significance as families visit cemeteries to light candles on the graves of their loved ones. This thoughtful tradition honours deceased family members and ancestors. Another beloved Finnish custom is the Christmas sauna, where families gather for a relaxing sauna session in the afternoon of Christmas Eve, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere to mark the occasion.
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, it's beautiful to reflect on the diverse ways in which different cultures observe this joyous season. From lighting candles to dancing, these traditions bring people closer, creating memories and spreading happiness across the world.
