China sets new target by 2020: Eradicate poverty
Beijing, Oct 13: China is determined but slow in its measures to eradicate poverty from the country by 2020. It plans to lift 70.17 million people living in the countryside above poverty line. '
Country leaders from the Communist Party of China (CPC) will gather from October 26 to 29 in Beijing for a key meeting to finalise the country's development plan for the next five years.

Poverty elevation will be the main agenda of China's development plan, said an official ahead of the 23rd International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Saturday, which is also China's second National POverty Relief Day.
Hong Tianyun, deputy director of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development of China said,"In the past 15 years, China has lifted more than 600 million people out of poverty, accounting for about 70 per cent of those brought out of poverty worldwide."
Citing it as a challenge for China, Hong said despite the number of people elevated from BPL category, still 70.17 people need to be addressed.
