China Constructs World's Largest Artificial Island Airport In Dalian

China is undertaking an impressive project in Dalian, Liaoning province, by constructing the world's largest artificial-island airport. This ambitious venture, known as the Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport, will be built entirely on reclaimed land in the sea. It aims to replace the current Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, which struggles with space limitations due to increasing passenger numbers.

The new airport will cover around 20.9 square kilometres, making it larger than Hong Kong International Airport and Kansai Airport, both of which are also on artificial islands. "For Dalian people to say it's the largest, that's exactly what it is," said Li Hanming, founder of an aviation consultancy. The strategic location near Japan and South Korea enhances its significance for international trade.

Advanced Techniques and Economic Impact

To create this massive artificial island, advanced land reclamation techniques are being employed. Millions of cubic meters of sand and rock are used to form the base. Once completed, the airport will feature four runways and a terminal covering 900,000 square metres. Initially, it will accommodate 43 million passengers annually, eventually expanding to handle 80 million passengers and 1 million tonnes of cargo each year.

Dalian's bustling port city status is bolstered by its population exceeding 6 million. The city thrives on oil refineries, shipping logistics, and coastal tourism. The new airport will significantly enhance Dalian's role as a major economic and transportation hub in the region.

Historical Context and Future Prospects

The existing Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport was originally constructed nearly a century ago during Japanese occupation. Despite several expansions over the years, it has reached its capacity limits. Last year alone, it managed 658,000 international passengers according to Xinhua reports.

The entire project is valued at $4.3 billion and is expected to be completed by 2035. As of August this year, foundation work on a 77,000 square metre reclamation area has been finished. Land reclamation efforts continue alongside terminal foundation work.

This development underscores China's engineering capabilities and commitment to infrastructure growth. By addressing increasing air travel demands in the region through this project, China aims to further solidify Dalian's position as a key player in global trade networks.
