Congress Lost Chhattisgarh Polls Due to Centralized Power: Jai Singh Agrawal
Chhattisgarh Congress leader Jai Singh Agrawal criticized outgoing CM Bhupesh Baghel for centralized power and lack of collective leadership, citing reasons for the partys loss in the Assembly polls.
In a significant development, Chhattisgarh Congress leader Jai Singh Agrawal has attributed the party's defeat in the recent Assembly polls to the centralization of power and the sidelining of ministers. His statement is widely seen as a direct attack on outgoing Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

Lack of Collective Leadership and Rural Focus
Agrawal pointed out several factors that contributed to the Congress's loss, including the lack of collective leadership, excessive focus on rural seats, and the absence of a comprehensive survey ahead of the polls. He also highlighted the prevailing atmosphere of internal conflict within the party.
BJP's Victory and Congress's Decline
Despite positive exit poll predictions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the state Assembly polls, securing 54 seats and relegating the Congress to second place with only 35 seats in the 90-member House. This outcome stands in stark contrast to the Congress's emphatic victory in 2018, when it won 68 seats and ended the BJP's 15-year rule.
Centralization of Power and Disregard for Mandate
Agrawal, who was among the nine ministers in Baghel's cabinet to lose their seats, expressed his disappointment that the Congress government failed to honor the mandate given by the people in 2018. He alleged that the ministers were deprived of their rightful powers, leading to a centralized decision-making process that involved only a select few individuals. This atmosphere of conflict and lack of empowerment further hindered the government's effectiveness.
Neglect of Urban Seats and Administrative Issues
Agrawal also raised concerns about the Congress's focus on farmers, which he believes led to the party's poor performance in urban seats, including Korba. He suggested that the party leadership, presumably referring to the Chief Minister, underestimated the importance of urban constituencies and concentrated its efforts solely on rural areas.
Furthermore, Agrawal criticized the administrative and police officials in Korba district, accusing them of disrupting development projects and allowing crime to flourish. He named specific collectors and superintendents of police, holding them responsible for these issues.
Inadequate Surveys and Misreading of Poll Outcome
Agrawal questioned the accuracy of the surveys conducted by the government for candidate selection. He claimed that he had submitted a revised report on Korba to Chief Minister Baghel, highlighting the flaws in the original survey. According to Agrawal, a more thorough and accurate survey could have helped the party anticipate the potential outcome of the polls and take necessary corrective measures.
Jai Singh Agrawal's candid assessment of the Congress's defeat in the Chhattisgarh Assembly polls sheds light on the internal challenges and strategic missteps that contributed to the party's downfall. His criticism of centralized power, lack of collective leadership, and inadequate attention to urban areas raises important questions about the party's future strategy and its ability to regain the trust of the electorate.
