The Maharashtra government has renamed Aurangabad railway station to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar station, emphasising Maratha heritage and boosting tourism. This change aligns with the previously announced renaming of Aurangabad city.

The Maharashtra government has officially renamed Aurangabad railway station to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar station. This change follows a gazette notification issued by the state authorities. The renaming aligns with the earlier decision to rename Aurangabad city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a tribute to Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's son.

Originally named after Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, the city's name was changed under the leadership of the Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government. The BJP-led Mahayuti government furthered this initiative by issuing a notification on October 15 to rename the railway station, according to an official statement on Saturday.

Historical Significance and Connectivity

Aurangabad railway station, established in 1900 by the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, is situated on the Kacheguda–Manmad section. This section primarily serves Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city and falls under the Nanded division of the South Central Railway zone. The station boasts rail connections with major Indian cities.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is renowned for its rich history and is a popular tourist destination. It is home to several historical sites, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves. The city is also known as the City of Gates, featuring numerous gates from the Mughal era and two ASI-protected monuments: Bibi ka Maqbara and Aurangabad caves.
