Chennai rains: Massive water-logging plagues city

Chennai residents are facing massive water-logging in parts of city followed by heavy rainfall on Friday.

Chennai experienced severe waterlogging with commuters remaining stranded on the roads for hours. Till 8: 30 am on Friday , Chennai and Nungambakkam registered 180 mm of rain, while Meenambakkam in the southern suburb recorded 140 mm of rain, according to Down To Earth bulletin.

Local, Sunnambu Kolathur, complained that "We are facing a tough situation, moreover this happens every year. Government has to take steps towards betterment."

The incidents of severe waterlogging revived the memory of 2015 when Chennai witnessed its worst floods in over a century with over 150 people losing lives. The city is likely to receive 300-500 mm more rain in the next few days, according to BBC weather.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Minister KP Anbalagan visited the water-logged areas in Chennai's Kovilambakkam. He said, " Rain has come all of a sudden. This is nature's fury, you must understand. We're working on a war footing to clear water."

"Now we have worked out Rs 600 crore master plan which will work in various ways to drain out the water," h said.
