Chennai: Parents washed away in floods; children kept on waiting

Chennai, Dec 10: This tragic incident has left two children in shock when the flood-water in Chennai receded, five days later when their parents bodies were found near Eechankadu signal in Pallikaranai.

On Wednesday, Dec 2, both children-- 10-year-old Niranjan and 7-year-old Aruna, were waiting for their parents to return from the airport safely on the day it was heavily raining. Both were unaware of the fact that they won't be able to see their parents again.

Maruthanayagam, 35, and his wife Nirmala Pushpam had left their children at their aunt's place which is located at Tuticorin.

Nirmala was the vice principal of Sankara Bala Vidya Mandir and had to go to Delhi to attend a conference. But due to cancellation of flight, the couple booked a cab to return home. Meanwhile, due to the flood water, the cab driver denied to go further to the destination and dropped the couple at Velachery.

Both of them were left with no option but to walk till their house.

After their (parents) didn't return from the airport , Maruthanayagam' s brother filed a complaint at a police station after they went missing on Monday, Dec 7.

As police began searching for the missing couple, they identified 10 dead bodies in which the couple's bodies were also found lying in a pool of water.

According to police officials, the parents last spoke to their children on Dec 1, the day after they had to leave for Chennai airport.

Meanwhile, bodies of their parents were identified by Maruthanayagam' s brother.

Police said "Pallikaranai is one of the worst hit flooded area and both were unaware of the fact about the Kovilambakkam lake had broken its banks. The couple must have tried to reach home while walking."
