Chennai Metro Phase-2 Project: Green Light For 118.9 Km Metro Rail Phase-II Expansion
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs' proposal for the Chennai Metro phase 2 project, which will consist of three corridors. The total length of the approved lines will be 118.9 km, featuring 128 stations.

The estimated completion cost for the project is ₹63,246 crore, with a target completion date set for 2027. Once Phase-II is fully operational, Chennai will boast a total Metro Rail network spanning 173 km. The Phase-II project includes the following corridors:
- - Corridor (i): From Madhavaram to SIPCOT, covering a length of 45.8 km with 50 stations.
- - Corridor (ii): From Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass, stretching 26.1 km with 30 stations.
- - Corridor (iii): From Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, measuring 47 km with 48 stations.
Benefits and Economic Growth
Phase-II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project marks a significant leap forward in the city's infrastructure development and acts as a major expansion of the Metro Rail network.
Enhanced connectivity: Phase-II will introduce approximately 118.9 km of new metro lines, connecting the north, south, east, and west of Chennai. The corridors will pass through key areas such as Madhavaram, Perambur, Thirumayilai, Adyar, Sholinganallur, SIPCOT, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Porur, Villivakkam, Anna Nagar, and St. Thomas Mount. This expansion will enhance public transportation for the workforce engaged in various industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. Importantly, it will connect rapidly developing regions like Sholinganallur, a hub for the south Chennai IT corridor, thereby meeting the transportation needs of the growing IT workforce.
Reduction in traffic congestion: The Metro Rail system offers an efficient alternative to road transport. Phase-II is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly on heavily trafficked routes. A reduction in road traffic will facilitate smoother vehicle movement, decrease travel times, and enhance overall road safety.
Environmental benefits: The addition of the Phase-II Metro Rail project will contribute to a substantial decrease in carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuel-based transport, promoting a cleaner environment.
Economic growth: Improved access and reduced travel times can boost productivity by enabling individuals to reach their workplaces more efficiently. The construction and operation of Chennai metro phase 2 will generate numerous job opportunities across various sectors, including construction, administration, and maintenance. Additionally, enhanced connectivity is expected to stimulate local businesses, attract investment, and promote development in previously less accessible areas.
Social impact: The expansion of the Phase-II Metro Rail network will provide equitable access to public transport, benefiting diverse socio-economic groups and reducing transportation disparities. This improvement in public transport will contribute to a higher quality of life by shortening commute times and enhancing access to essential services.
The Phase-II Chennai Metro Rail Project is poised to be a transformative initiative for the city, promising enhanced connectivity, reduced traffic congestion, environmental benefits, economic growth, and improved quality of life. By tackling critical urban challenges and laying the groundwork for future expansion, Metro Phase 2 will play a vital role in shaping Chennai's development trajectory and sustainability.
