Chennai finds respite in the hands of sex workers, donate Rs 1 lakh

Ahmednagar, Dec 8: When the entire country united in the relief and rescue of the Chennai flood victims, sex workers from Maharashtra's Ahmednagar were not left behind.

They collected a sum of Rs 1 Lakh by surviving on one meal a day. The women handed over the cheque to the district collector Anil Kawade on Monday at an event organised by NGO Snehalaya in Ahmednagar.

Founder Girish Kulkarni applauded their move and said that the women were eager to help the day news of the flood broke. These women were restless when they came to know of the deluge in Chennai. They decided that they should do something to help residents there... We are in touch with Delhi-based NGO Goonj for ensuring further relief to the people of Chennai," he added.

Of the 3,000 sex workers in Maharashtra, 2000 contributed to the relief fund. Tamil Nadu has been facing immense crisis after rains lashed the state for the past one week. With 20 cm rainfall in a span of 14 hours, Chennai was in utter deluge.
