Chandrababu Naidu Will Prevent Any Bill That Harms Muslims' Interests, Says TDP Leader Nawab Jan
Amidst the controversy surrounding the Waqf Amendment Bill, several Muslim organisations have voiced their opposition. Nawab Jan, a senior leader from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), assured that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu would not allow any legislation that negatively impacts Muslims. Speaking at the Samvidhan Bachao Sammelan, organised by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Jan urged collective efforts to prevent the bill's passage in Parliament.

The Waqf Amendment Bill, introduced in August in the Lok Sabha, has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for review. The bill has sparked intense debate, with the government claiming it does not aim to interfere with mosque operations. However, the opposition argues it targets Muslims and undermines constitutional values. The committee's discussions have been contentious, with accusations of bias and disruptions.
Political Dynamics and Secularism
Jan highlighted Naidu's secular approach, stating that he views both Hindus and Muslims as integral to development. "Chandrababu Naidu has always said he has two eyes -- one Hindu and one Muslim," Jan remarked. He emphasised that any harm to one community affects the entire society. Under Naidu's leadership, Muslims have reportedly experienced unprecedented benefits since India's Independence.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lacks a majority in the Lok Sabha and relies on support from allies like TDP and Janata Dal (United). The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has intensified its campaign against the bill, urging leaders like Naidu and Nitish Kumar of JD(U) to consider Muslim sentiments. They called on NDA parties claiming secularism to distance themselves from this contentious legislation.
Concerns Over Religious Institutions
Jan claimed that Naidu recently stated that religious institutions should be managed by people of their respective faiths. He stressed tolerance but warned against actions threatening national unity. "We will tolerate everything, but will not tolerate any attempt to harm the unity of the country," Jan asserted. He credited Naidu for enabling the bill's referral to Parliament's Joint Committee.
The committee meetings have been fraught with tension. Opposition members accused the Chair of inviting irrelevant organisations, including those focused on Hindu causes, while BJP members accused rivals of disrupting proceedings deliberately. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind insists that secular parties within NDA must oppose this dangerous bill.
The ongoing debate over the Waqf Amendment Bill highlights significant political and religious tensions in India. As discussions continue, stakeholders are urged to consider diverse perspectives and maintain harmony among communities.
