Centre to support Puducherry for modernising police

Puducherry, Feb 28: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir today urged the union territory government to evolve plans to equip its police with modern equipment and technology and pledged the Centre's support in this regard.

The Centre would provide necessary financial assistance to the Puducherry government in its efforts to equip the police with latest technologies so that crimes of any type could be tackled without hiccups, he said at the passing out parade of India Reserve Battalion personnel here.

Ahir lauded the Puducherry Police for maintaining law and order 'well'. "I pay my compliments to the police for their excellent role in ensuring a peaceful Puducherry," he said.

The Union Minister also appreciated the initiatives of Lt Governor Kiran Bedi in the implementation of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.

The leadership provided by Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and the Lt Governor should be utilised by the people for the progress of the Union Territory, he said.

He said Puducherry was making a mark in implementing digital and cashless transaction as had been visualised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and there was still scope for scaling greater heights.

Bedi said she was glad to see that as many as 98 women candidates had volunteered to become part of the police force and 303 personnel now inducted in the constable rank were recruited through transparent and fair selection mode.

Narayanasamy sought the Union Home Ministry's support to further strengthen the police force here.

Director General of Police S K Gautam highlighted the role of police in various activities and social service programmes.

Welfare Minister M Kandasamy was among those present on the occasion.
