Centre To Launch Online Portal ‘Umeed’ On June 6 For Waqf Property Management

The central government is set to unveil the 'Umeed' portal on 6 June, aimed at improving the management and ensuring greater transparency of Waqf properties across the country, according to sources.

The platform, which stands for 'Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development', will function as a centralised system for the registration of Waqf properties nationwide, the sources added.

Under the plan, all Waqf properties will need to be registered on the portal within six months of its launch, reported India Today.

Comprehensive details, including the length, breadth, and geotagged location of each property, will be mandatory.

Properties registered in the names of women will not qualify to be declared as Waqf. The primary beneficiaries of Waqf assets are expected to include women, children, and economically disadvantaged groups.

Registrations will be carried out through the respective State Waqf Boards.

Properties that cannot be registered within the given timeframe due to technical or other significant reasons may be granted an extension of one to two months. However, properties remaining unregistered beyond the extended deadline will be treated as disputed and referred to the Waqf Tribunal for resolution.

The portal is being launched in the context of the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which received presidential assent from President Droupadi Murmu on 5 April, following intense deliberations in both Houses of Parliament.

Several petitions challenging the Waqf Act are currently pending before the Supreme Court. The Centre has requested the court to dismiss these challenges, asserting that the legislation does not infringe upon constitutional rights.

On 17 April, the Supreme Court declined to issue a stay on the Act after the government assured it would temporarily withhold the implementation of certain provisions. During the latest hearing on 27 May, the apex court sought responses from the Centre and other concerned parties.
