Centre Bans Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix Over Obscene Content

In a major crackdown, the Centre has banned multiple apps and websites over obscene content, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

The government has taken the said action against 25 platforms, including ALTT aka ALTBalaji, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, and Gulab App, according to a report in Money Control.

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has directed the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block the access for the platforms as the government aims to regulate digital platforms and prevent the circulation of explicit material online.

"The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has taken action in coordination with various intermediaries, to block 18 OTT platforms publishing obscene, vulgar, and, in some instances, pornographic content. Nineteen websites, 10 apps (seven on Google Play Store, three on Apple App Store), and 57 social media accounts associated with these platforms have been disabled for public access in India," the I&B Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry acted following multiple complaints and reports claiming that the said platforms were streaming content, which, according to the authorities, was "soft porn,

"Anurag Singh Thakur has repeatedly emphasised the responsibility of the platforms to not propagate obscenity, vulgarity and abuse under the guise of 'creative expression'," the ministry added.
