Congress Critiques Centre's Presentation of June Tax Devolution to States

The Congress party has openly criticized the Central Government's recent announcement regarding the tax devolution to states for June, labeling it as a superficial public relations effort. On Monday, the Centre confirmed the authorization of a substantial tax devolution sum of Rs 1,39,750 crore to states for June. This decision includes the regular devolution amount for June 2024 and an additional instalment, as per the statement from the finance ministry.

Critique on Tax Devolution Move

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh voiced his disapproval through a post on X, stating that the finance ministry's announcement, which is being touted as a significant financial move, was made under the influence of the Prime Minister. He emphasized that tax devolutions are not discretionary gestures but constitutional rights determined by the finance commission. Ramesh criticized the government's portrayal of this financial distribution as a benevolent offering, likening it to 'prasad' being handed out.

The finance ministry's statement highlighted that currently, 41 per cent of taxes collected by the Centre are distributed in 14 instalments among states throughout the fiscal year. With the latest release, the total amount devolved to states for the fiscal year 2024-25 until June 10, 2024, amounts to Rs 2,79,500 crore.

This financial distribution is part of a structured process mandated by the constitution and overseen by the finance commission. The criticism from Congress underscores a broader debate on fiscal federalism and the dynamics of financial relations between the central and state governments in India.
