Extended Midnight Traffic Block on Central Railway's Harbour Line Disrupts Services
Due to the commissioning of five more parking areas for empty trains, the Central Railway has extended its midnight traffic block between Belapur and Panvel until October 8. This extension will disrupt suburban services during this period.
The Central Railway (CR) announced on Thursday, October 5th, an extension of the midnight traffic block between Belapur and Panvel on the Harbour Line. The block, originally slated to last from October 2nd to October 5th, has now been extended by three more days until October 8th. This decision was taken with the aim of facilitating the commissioning of five additional parking areas for empty trains.
Extension Of Midnight Traffic Block

The announcement came in a release from CR which stated that to commission these new sidings or parking areas for vacant trains, a midnight block would be operated from 1:15 am to 4:45 am between October 5th and October 8th. As a result of this operational adjustment, suburban services will remain suspended between Belapur and Panvel stations during this block period.
Impact On Local Train Operations
This move is expected to have significant implications on local train operations. In addition to suspending services between Belapur and Panvel stations during the extended block period, another traffic block will be implemented on the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Wadi Bunder section. This second traffic stoppage is scheduled to take place between 11:15 pm and 5 am from October 6th through till October 8th.
This measure is being undertaken in order to provide connectivity of receiving/dispatch line No.3 with line No7 between CSMT and Wadi Bunder Yard as per information provided in the same release.
Suspension Of Services On Trans-Harbour Line
In related news, CR also had suspended local train operations on the Trans-Harbour Line Thane-Navi Mumbai corridor between Belapur and Panvel earlier in the day due to incomplete works. It is expected that these operational disruptions will cause inconvenience to commuters, but the long-term benefits of improved train parking facilities and enhanced connectivity are being touted as reasons for this temporary suspension.
In conclusion, while these traffic blocks and service suspensions may pose short-term challenges for Mumbai's commuters, they are part of Central Railway’s strategy to improve railway infrastructure in the city. The commissioning of additional parking areas for empty trains and enhancing line connectivity will ultimately lead to better management of railway operations. Commuters are advised to stay informed about these changes and plan their travel accordingly during the block period.
