CCS Approves Procurement of 31 Predator Drones and Indigenous Construction of Nuclear Submarines
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has sanctioned the purchase of 31 Predator drones from the US and the domestic construction of two nuclear-powered submarines. This move is aimed at bolstering India's military capabilities, according to sources. The MQ-9B drones, acquired through the foreign military sales route from General Atomics, will cost approximately USD 3.1 billion.

Focus on Surveillance Enhancement
India's primary objective in acquiring these drones is to enhance surveillance, particularly along its disputed border with China. Last June, the Defence Ministry approved the procurement of MQ-9B Predator armed drones under a government-to-government agreement. These drones are a variant of the MQ-9 Reaper, which was used in July 2022 to eliminate al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul.
Distribution Among Armed Forces
The Indian Navy will receive 15 Sea Guardian drones, while the Air Force and Army will each obtain eight Sky Guardian drones. These high-altitude, long-endurance drones can stay airborne for over 35 hours. They are equipped to carry four Hellfire missiles and around 450 kg of bombs, enhancing their operational versatility.
Submarine Construction Details
The indigenous construction of two nuclear-powered conventional submarines will cost approximately Rs 40,000 crore. These projects were approved during a CCS meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The submarines are expected to significantly boost India's naval strength.
Sea Guardian drones are being procured for their ability to perform diverse roles such as maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and over-the-horizon targeting. Their versatility makes them a valuable asset for India's defence forces in various operational scenarios.
The approval of these procurement projects marks a significant step in strengthening India's defence capabilities. By acquiring advanced technology and enhancing indigenous production, India aims to address security challenges effectively while maintaining strategic autonomy.
