CBSE Plans To Introduce Two Tiers For Science And Social Science In Classes 9 And 10 Starting 2026-27
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is considering introducing two tiers for Science and Social Science in Classes 9 and 10. This change, expected to start in the 2026-27 academic year, follows the board's earlier introduction of two levels for Mathematics in Class 10 during the 2019-20 session. The decision aims to align with the National Education Policy, 2020.
In a recent meeting, CBSE's curriculum committee discussed offering these subjects at both standard and advanced levels. However, the board's governing body, which holds ultimate authority, will make the final decision. This move mirrors the policy's goal to lessen academic pressure and reduce reliance on coaching.

Aligning with National Education Policy
The National Education Policy, 2020 suggests that subjects and assessments could be offered at two levels. This approach allows students to choose between standard and higher levels for some subjects. The policy aims to ease student stress and curb the coaching culture prevalent in India.
CBSE is currently awaiting new textbooks from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). These books will align with the updated National Curriculum Framework. The board has not yet decided on study materials for these courses until NCERT releases these textbooks.
Mathematics Levels: A Precedent
CBSE introduced two Mathematics levels—standard and basic—for Class 10 students in 2019-20. In the 2023-24 exams, more students opted for the standard level than the basic one. Specifically, 15,88,041 students registered for standard Mathematics compared to 6,79,560 for basic Mathematics.
This trend indicates a preference among students for more challenging coursework when given a choice. The success of this system in Mathematics likely influenced CBSE's decision to consider similar options for Science and Social Science.
By offering multiple levels of difficulty, CBSE aims to cater to diverse student needs and learning paces. This initiative reflects an effort to personalise education while maintaining rigorous standards across different subjects.
The proposed changes are still under review by CBSE's governing body. If approved, they could significantly impact how students approach their studies in Classes 9 and 10 from 2026 onwards.
