CBI to Probe Alleged Irregularities in NEET-UG Following Education Ministry Directive

The Centre has officially declared that the investigation into the alleged irregularities surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will now be under the jurisdiction of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decision was made public late Saturday night, highlighting the government's response to concerns over the integrity of competitive examinations. This move is part of a broader initiative to address issues in the examination system, which also saw the dismissal of National Testing Agency (NTA) Director General Subodh Singh and the establishment of a seven-member committee led by former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan aimed at reforming exam processes.

CBI Probes NEET-UG Irregularities

Reports of cheating, impersonation, and other malpractices during the NEET-UG conducted on May 5 prompted this significant step. A senior official from the Education Ministry emphasized that this decision underscores the government's dedication to maintaining the transparency and sanctity of the examination process. The official further assured that stringent measures would be taken against any individuals or entities found complicit in these irregularities.

The NEET-UG exam, which took place across 4,750 centres nationwide, saw participation from approximately 24 lakh candidates. Initially scheduled for results announcement on June 14, the results were unexpectedly declared ten days earlier, on June 4. The premature results announcement, coupled with allegations of irregularities, sparked protests, legal actions, and political debates across several cities.

In response to these allegations, a new petition was submitted to the Supreme Court, requesting that both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conduct investigations into the matter. This petition was filed by ten students who participated in the NEET-UG exam and also called for an expedited investigation by Bihar Police with a report to be submitted to the apex court.

The Supreme Court has previously demanded responses from various stakeholders, including the Centre and NTA, regarding petitions that challenge the NEET-UG 2024 exam and request a court-monitored investigation. Additionally, it has halted all related legal proceedings pending in different high courts.

Amidst these controversies, a record number of 67 students achieved a perfect score of 720 in this year's exam. Notably, six of these top scorers were from a single centre in Faridabad, Haryana, raising suspicions about potential irregularities. Further controversy arose over grace marks awarded to candidates at six centres to compensate for lost time during the exam. The Centre has since informed the Supreme Court that it will retract these grace marks and offer affected students an option for retest.

The NTA is set to conduct this retest for 1,563 candidates on Sunday. The NEET-UG examination serves as a gateway for students seeking admission into undergraduate medical courses such as MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, among others in both government and private institutions across India.

This series of events underscores a critical moment for India's education system as it seeks to uphold fairness and integrity within its competitive examination framework. With investigations now underway by one of India's premier investigative agencies, stakeholders await outcomes that will hopefully restore confidence in these crucial academic assessments.
