Ex-Principal of RG Kar Medical College Charged with Rape and Murder by CBI

In a significant development, the CBI on Saturday charged Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, with rape and murder. Ghosh is currently in judicial custody for a corruption case, an official from the probe agency stated. The agency also arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of Tala Police Station, for his alleged involvement in the crime.

The central agency had applied before a court seeking Ghosh's remand. The court has instructed jail authorities to produce him for CBI custody, the official added. Three individuals have been arrested so far in connection with this case.

Arrests and Charges

Mondal was questioned by CBI officers at their CGO Complex office for several hours on Saturday. He was arrested in the evening after failing to provide satisfactory answers. Both Ghosh and Mondal face charges of evidence destruction and other offences. Mondal is also accused of delaying the lodging of the FIR.

The semi-nude body of the woman postgraduate trainee was found on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital. This hospital falls under the jurisdiction of Tala Police Station, where Mondal was in charge.

Mondal has been questioned eight times previously, each time providing different versions of events. He has now been arrested and will be produced in court tomorrow, according to the CBI officer. Following his arrest, he underwent a customary post-arrest medical test at a hospital.

Earlier, a civic volunteer was arrested by Kolkata Police in connection with this case. The investigation was later handed over to the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
