In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two senior officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and four others in connection with a bribery case involving an amount of Rs 20 lakh. The arrests were made in relation to the Outer Ring Road Project in Maharashtra's Nagpur.

Arrested Individuals

The arrested individuals include Arvind Kale, General Manager of NHAI in Nagpur, and Brijesh Kumar Sahu, Deputy General Manager of NHAI in Madhya Pradesh's Harda. Along with them, the directors of Bhopal-based Bansal Construction Works Private Limited - Anil Bansal and Kunal Bansal - as well as employees of the firm Chhater Singh Lodhi and C Krishna were also apprehended by the CBI.

Searches and Recoveries

As part of the investigation, the CBI conducted searches at five locations in Bhopal and Nagpur, covering both residential and official premises. During these searches, a substantial amount of cash, including the bribe amount of Rs 20 lakh, was recovered. The total amount seized during the searches amounted to Rs 1.1 crore.

FIR and Allegations

The CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the matter, naming 11 individuals, including four NHAI officials, the company, its directors, and employees. The allegations suggest that the directors of the Bhopal-based private company were involved in bribing various public servants of the NHAI through their employees. These bribes were allegedly paid in exchange for the issuance of completion certificates, processing of bills, and ensuring smooth progression of awarded works in road projects undertaken by the NHAI.

Modus Operandi

According to the CBI, the employees of the private company were responsible for delivering bribes to officials in Nagpur and Madhya Pradesh. It is alleged that C Krishna, one of the arrested individuals, maintained regular contact with Arvind Kale to facilitate the clearance of pending matters, including processing pending bills and issuing completion certificates, in return for bribes related to the Outer Ring Road project.

Trap and Apprehension

Based on surveillance and intelligence inputs, the CBI learned that an amount of Rs 25 lakh was likely to be delivered to Arvind Kale. Consequently, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended Kale after he received a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from an employee of the private company. The agency's spokesperson confirmed the arrests and highlighted the ongoing investigation into the matter.

The arrests made by the CBI in this bribery case underscore the agency's commitment to combating corruption and ensuring transparency in public works projects. The investigation is expected to shed light on the extent of the alleged irregularities and bring those responsible to justice.
