CGST Inspector, Middlemen Held in Rs 10 Lakh Bribery Case in Jaipur

The CBI has arrested a CGST inspector and two middlemen from Jaipur in connection with a Rs 10 lakh bribery case in which an Indian Revenue Service officer has also been named as a suspect.

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) inspector and two middlemen from Jaipur in connection with a Rs 10 lakh bribery case. An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer has also been named as a suspect in the case.

Arrests Made

The CBI arrested Inspector Ankit Aswal and two middlemen, Sonu and Ashok, who were allegedly involved in the exchange of bribe money. An FIR was registered based on the allegation that the officer demanded a bribe to avoid arresting the complainant in a case he was investigating.

IRS Officer Named

The CBI has also named IRS CGST Sandeep Payal as an accused in the case. According to officials, Aswal is accused of being part of a team that demolished the complainant's premises in 2021. The inspector allegedly threatened the complainant with arrest if his demand for a bribe was not met.

Modus Operandi

Aswal, currently serving as Preventive Officer in Jaipur, claimed that the bribe was for him and Sandeep Payal and was to be routed through a Jaipur-based jeweller. He allegedly asked the complainant to make the payment to the jeweller or face arrest in the tax case.

Evidence Gathered

The CBI recorded the calls, in the presence of independent witnesses, where the demand for the bribe was made. The CBI team laid a trap and caught a middleman accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh on behalf of the inspector.
