Car Expedition Flags Off to Celebrate 290th Anniversary of Mumbai's Naval Dockyard

A car expedition has been launched in Bhopal to commemorate the 290th anniversary of Mumbai's Naval Dockyard. This event highlights the Navy's history and promotes inter-service collaboration among India's armed forces.

On Saturday, Lieutenant General Arvind Chauhan, the General Officer Commanding of Sudarshan Chakra Corps, initiated a car expedition at the Dronachal Military complex. This event marks the 290th anniversary of Mumbai's Naval Dockyard. The expedition is a significant part of a larger naval journey through Mumbai, Shimla, Kalpa, and Kinnaur. It aims to celebrate a rich legacy and strengthen ties between India's Tri-services and the public.

The ceremony in Bhopal's Army Cantonment highlights the Navy's dedication to honouring its past while promoting collaboration among services and engaging with the public. The car expedition spans 21 days and is divided into four legs. Each leg includes 40 participants, comprising Naval Officers and Defence Civilians, travelling in 12 iconic vehicles. This journey will visit key locations to highlight the Navy's crucial role in maritime security.

Celebrating Naval Heritage

The Indian Army's involvement showcases the unified spirit of India's armed forces in celebrating national pride and defence accomplishments. This event not only honours the dockyard's historical achievements but also presents the Navy's future vision. This vision is characterised by advanced technology, strategic innovation, and dedicated service to the nation.

Established in 1735 as Bombay Dockyard, it boasts a heritage spanning nearly three centuries. Between 1725 and 1821, over 150 ships exceeding 100 tons were built here. Notable vessels like HMS Hindustan, HMS Asia, and HMS Cornwallis were constructed, many later serving in the Royal Navy.

Historical Significance

The dockyard's innovations include Asia's first dry dock, the Bombay Dock, inaugurated in 1750. It remains operational alongside Duncan Dock, once the largest dry dock outside Europe. Over time, the dockyard has played a vital role in naval operations. During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, it provided essential repairs and modifications that ensured India's maritime dominance.

The dockyard's ongoing evolution reflects India's pursuit of self-reliance and excellence in defence manufacturing. This aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The event underscores the Navy's commitment to its history while fostering inter-service collaboration and public engagement.
