Shimla Residents Organise Peace March on September 27 to Promote Communal Harmony

Amidst rising communal tensions due to an unauthorised mosque controversy, civil society members have planned a Sadbhavna March on 27 September. The march aims to promote peace and unity. Former Shimla Mayor Sanjay Chauhan urged people to gather near the DC Office in Shimla at 11 am on that day. The march is a protest against attempts to sow discord among communities.

Chauhan highlighted that a personal quarrel is being exaggerated into a community conflict, creating fear in Shimla. He emphasised that Shimla has historically been a place where diverse communities coexist peacefully. According to him, the Indian Constitution grants everyone the right to live and work anywhere in the country.

Impact on Shimla's Image and Economy

The former mayor expressed concern over the negative impact of such incidents on Shimla's reputation and economy. He noted that this unrest has tarnished Himachal's image nationwide and adversely affected tourism and business in the region. Such events are unprecedented in Shimla's history, he added.

Chauhan stressed the importance of maintaining harmony in a city known for its cultural diversity and mutual respect among different religious and regional groups. He urged citizens to join the march as a stand against divisive efforts.

The Sadbhavna March represents a collective effort by ordinary citizens to counteract hostility and promote unity. It seeks to remind people of their constitutional rights and responsibilities towards each other, fostering an environment of mutual understanding.

This initiative underscores the need for peaceful coexistence in a diverse society like India, where different communities have historically lived together harmoniously. The march aims to restore peace and protect the economic interests of Shimla by addressing communal tensions constructively.
