C P Radhakrishnan To Be Sworn In As India’s 15th Vice President Tomorrow At Rashtrapati Bhavan

C P Radhakrishnan is set to take oath as the 15th Vice President of India on Friday, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office at 10 am, officials confirmed.

The election for the post was necessitated after the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21. Dhankhar, who assumed office in August 2022, stepped down unexpectedly, creating a vacancy in the second-highest constitutional position in the country.

Radhakrishnan, 67, a veteran politician and former Governor of Maharashtra, emerged victorious in the vice-presidential election conducted earlier this week. He defeated the joint opposition nominee, B Sudershan Reddy, by a decisive margin of 152 votes. His win has been viewed as a continuation of the ruling coalition's strong grip over key constitutional offices.

Following his election, Radhakrishnan formally resigned as Governor of Maharashtra on Thursday. In response, President Murmu appointed Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat to take on the additional responsibility of discharging duties as Maharashtra's Governor until further orders. The decision ensures continuity in state administration until a permanent appointment is made.

Radhakrishnan's political journey has spanned decades, during which he has held key roles both within his party and in governance. His elevation to the vice presidency adds to his profile as a seasoned leader with administrative experience and political acumen.

The vice-presidential role is crucial as it includes presiding over the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament, and playing a key part in shaping debates and legislative processes. With his swearing-in, Radhakrishnan will now occupy this pivotal position, succeeding Dhankhar in overseeing the functioning of the Upper House while also serving as the second-highest constitutional authority in the country.
