By-polls: BJP wins in Surat (West), AIADMK in Yercaud

Purnesh Modi of BJP trounced his Congress rival D L Patel by more than 66,000 votes. With this, the ruling party's seat tally has gone up to 120 in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly. Purnesh Modi, who is also Surat city BJP President, bagged 86,061 votes, while Patel, a prominent local leader of Koli Patel community, could garner only 19,769, district election officials said.

Modi, in his tweet, congratulated BJP candidate Purnesh Modi for his victory in the by-polls.

In Yercaud, sfter the first round of counting, AIADMK candidate P Saroja got 5126 votes while DMK's V Maran registered 2782 votes.

The number of voters, who opted for 'NOTA' (None of the above) was 230, reported The Times of India.

The AIADMK and the DMK are the only two parties in the fray.
