In what can be described as a blot on the society we live in, an 8-month-old baby was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin in Delhi. The infant, found on blood soaked bed, has been admitted to a hospital and her condition is said to be critical.
The incident, which took place in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh area, came to light on Monday night and the accused has been arrested.
The infant's father said that both he and his wife had gone out for work while the sister-in-law was supposed to baby-sit. Reports say that the child's cousin was playing with her for a while.
"I had left for work leaving my children at home. My wife works too. So she too left for work soon after. When she came back, she saw blood-soaked bed and clothes of the child. When she told this to her sister-in-law she made excuses. My child is in critical condition now," the infant's father told the media.
Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal, who visited the hospital see the baby, said that a mechanism should be set up wherein perpetrators of such henous crime should be tried in fast track courts and sent to the gallows.
"What to do? How can Delhi sleep today when 8 month baby has been brutally raped in Capital? Have we become so insensitive or we have simply accepted this as our fate? Where is the sena which attacked a school bus to 'protect honour'? No one to ask questions from the system now?" Maliwal tweeted.
The parents rushed to the police and a case was filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences or POCSO and other sections of Indian Penal code. A medical examination has confirmed rape, the police said.
