Munger, May 13: When everybody was scampering for safety in the wake of a series of powerful earthquakes, a team of doctors in Munger district continued with a surgical procedure on a pregnant woman and came out only after delivering a healthy baby.

Munger Civil Surgeon Rameshwar Mahto told PTI today that the pregnant woman Soni Devi, a native of Basudeopur locality of Munger town, was taken to the operation theatre for a cesarean section when the first tremor was felt at about 12.35 PM yesterday.

Sensing the tremor, the staff in the Munger District Hospital ran out for safety in the open. But, Gynecologist Dr Nirmala Gupta and OT in-charge Veena Sharma did not abandon the woman in the operation theatre and continued with the surgical procedure braving several aftershocks.

The Civil Surgeon rushed to the OT after receiving information about the doctor who had stayed back and remained with them in the hour of crisis.

They came out of the OT only after delivery of a healthy baby. Mahto said the doctors simply followed the Hippocratic Oath which medical students take on joining the MBBS course.

"We take pledge to serve human beings sincerely and that is what the lady doctor and the others did," he said with a sense of pride.

The woman's husband Amarnath Singh and other relatives, who were anxiously waiting outside the OT, profusely thanked god and the doctors for the safe delivery.

Munger District Magistrate Amrendra Kumar Singh who was informed about the incident came to the district hospital and congratulated the doctors. "They displayed an immense sense of duty which deserves praise," the DM said.
