Mumbai voted on Tuesday to decide which political party will have the control over India's richest civic body.

Mumbai, Feb 21: Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis who was the face of the Bharatiya Janata Party's campaign for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls tweeted "Thank you #Mumbai for the record voting percentage & people from all Municipal Corporations & ZP for participating in festival of democracy!"

Mumbai voted on Tuesday to decide which political party will have the control over India's richest civic body. Annual budget for BMC is more than Rs. 35 crores which is more than budget of some states. BMC polls this year saw a contest between Shiv Sena and BJP. Shiv Sena broke off two-decade old alliance with BJP for BMC polls and both the parties campaigned to win the polls.

The campaigning for BMC had been so intense that Fadnavis had said that he will take the responsibility for BJP losing BMC polls. Shiv Sena has had the control of BMC for two decades and a loss for Sena would mean the party is at a loss of major political space.

Shiv Sena after the assembly polls in Maharashtra has been reduced to a role of junior partner in the government with BJP winning more seats than Sena. Top politicians, sports stars, Hindi movie actors all voted for BMC in a record voter turnout on Tuesday.

Along with Mumbai voting was held for nine other municipalities in Maharashtra.
