BMC passes resolution to make 'Vande Mataram' mandatory in its schools

The diktat comes after the Madras High court made the singing of the national song compulsory in all schools in Tamil Nadu.

The Bruhanmumbai Municipal Corporation has passed a resolution making singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in all BMC-run schools, The controversial diktat comes days after a similar order was passed by the Madras High Court.

"The BMC has passed a notice of motion to make Vande Mataram compulsory in BMC-run schools. It will be sent to the state government for a final decision," said Vishwanath Mahadeshwar Mumbai Mayor and Shiv Sena leader.

The row over making singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in schools across Maharashtra had led to a ruckus in the state assembly. The idea was first proposed by BJP MLA Raj Purohit but was vehemently opposed by leaders of the Samajwadi Party and the All India Majlis e Ittehad-Ul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

In a move that is sure to create more flutter, Mumbai's civic body has passed a resolution to made singing Vande Mataram mandatory albeit, the resolution only includes schools run by the BMC. The resolution will come into effect only of the state government approves the same. The Shiv Sena had supported the move in the state assembly and now a Shiv Sena led BMC has passed a resolution on similar lines.
