BMC elections: BJP gains big, Congress puts up disastrous show
The Congress faced yet another humiliating defeat in the civic elections in Maharashtra. The Congress put up a dismal performance in all five local bodies. The BJP had won 470 seats, Shiv Sena, 215, Congress 99, MNS, 16 and others 61 in all the five local bodies put together.
In Mumbai the Shiv Sena won 84 seats while the BJP bagged 82. The BJP has called it a wonderful day following its performance in the Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation. However both parties will fall short of the magic number of 114 seats in the 224 member BMC. The BJP's Ashish Shelar claimed the support of 4 more corporators.
Parties | BMC election result 2017 | 2012 |
Shiv Sena | 84 | 75 |
Bharatiya Janata Party | 82 | 31 |
Congress | 31 | 52 |
NCP | 09 | 13 |
MNS | 07 | 28 |
Others | 14 | 28 |
Total won | 227/227 | 227/227 |
The Congress put up a disastrous show winning just 31 seats. This led to the resignation of the party's regional chief Sanjay Nirupam. The MNS was completely out of contention winning just 7 seats. The NCP too put up a disastrous show winning only 9 while the others bagged 14.
The BJP however made major gains across Maharashtra. The BJP won the Pune Municipal Corporation while the NCP was pushed to the second spot. The Shiv Sena and MNS put out a poor performance in Pune. In the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation near Pune, the ruling NCP was leading while the BJP was in second place with 21 seats. The Shiv Sena however retained control over the Thane Municipal Corporation.
Nagpur appeared to be going the BJP way, with the party leading in 70 of the civic body's 151 seats, the Congress in 20 and the NCP and Shiv Sena in one seat each. In Nashik, the BJP is set to bag the 112-member civic body. The BJP was faring well in Amravati too.
