BJP's big UP win busts demonetisation ill-effect myth

The BJP's mammoth victory in Uttar Pradesh seems to have silenced demonetisation baiters for good. Parties that were hoping for ill-effects of demonetisation to burn a hole in the BJP's prospects in the Uttar Pradesh elections, were left red-faced as the BJP managed to crush the Samajwadi party and Congress alliance while pushing the Bahujan Samaj Party to a non-entity. Leaders of the BJP were quick to declare that the results were an indication that the people were with Prime Minister Modi.

BJP's big UP win busts demonetisation

"Today the nation is standing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is the victory of the people of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand," said Union Minister Piyush Goyal. As if demonetisation had absolutely no ill-effect on the common man, people of Uttar Pradesh voted for the BJP to form the government with absolute majority. While the Samajwadi party, as well as the BSP, tried to milk the demonetisation cow, reiterating the hardships that people had to face during a cash crunch, the people's verdict has come out in favour of the BJP.

"We respect the mandate, but development has lost and vote bank politics has won," said Rajiv Shukla of the Congress. The Congress had been criticising the BJP government's demonetisation move for pulling the economy down and putting the common man through hardships. Uttar Pradesh assembly poll was touted to be BJP's biggest test after the demonetisation move and the party has emerged victorious beyond anyone's expectations. While the Prime Minister, the RBI and the BJP government at large were criticised for putting the entire nation through a cash crunch starting November 8, people of Uttar Pradesh have shown that demonetisation was no matter in deciding on the government they want in the state.
