BJP Wins in Delhi Elections with Reduced Victory Margins
In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked a commanding presence in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, with debutant Yogendra Chandoliya securing a monumental victory over Congress's Udit Raj by more than 2.90 lakh votes in the North West Delhi constituency. This victory stands out as the largest margin among the seven BJP candidates who triumphed in the national capital.

Contrasting with the 2019 elections, where BJP's winning margins spanned from over 2.28 lakh to 5.78 lakh votes, this year witnessed a mixed bag of results. Notably, three BJP candidates, including Bansuri Swaraj, the daughter of the late party leader Sushma Swaraj, won with margins less than a lakh votes. Bansuri Swaraj, stepping into the political arena for the first time, was victorious over AAP's Somnath Bharti by over 78,000 votes, taking over the seat previously held by outgoing MP and Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi.
Delhi's smallest parliamentary constituency in terms of voter numbers, New Delhi, along with Chandni Chowk and North East Delhi constituencies, garnered significant attention due to the profile of candidates contesting. Praveen Khandelwal clinched the Chandni Chowk seat by defeating Congress veteran JP Agarwal by a margin of 89,325 votes. Manoj Tiwari, a well-known Bhojpuri film celebrity and the only sitting MP repeated by BJP in Delhi, secured his third consecutive win from North East Delhi against Congress's Kanhaiya Kumar by more than 1.38 lakh votes.
The South Delhi seat was won by BJP's Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, who defeated AAP's Sahi Ram Pahalwan by a margin of 1,24,333 votes. Kamaljeet Sehrawat, another poll debutant from BJP, emerged victorious against AAP's Mahabal Mishra in a significant win by over 1.99 lakh votes.
Harsh Malhotra made his mark by winning the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat against AAP's Kuldeep Kumar by a margin of 93,663 votes. Malhotra succeeded Gautam Gambhir as the BJP candidate for this constituency.
Ajay Mahawar, convener of Delhi BJP's poll management committee, addressed concerns regarding the perceived decline in victory margins. He attributed the comfortable winning margins to a direct contest with INDIA bloc candidates and highlighted that the opposition's claims of an inability to win in a straight fight against the AAP-Congress alliance were unfounded. He further explained that the margins in 2019 were higher due to AAP and Congress contesting separately.
On the other hand, AAP acknowledged their challenging performance in Delhi despite adverse circumstances. The party emphasized that their candidates put up a strong fight against BJP's politics of hatred and dictatorship, as reflected in the narrow victory margins.
This election cycle has not only showcased individual political journeys and strategies but also highlighted the evolving dynamics within Delhi's political landscape. The results underscore a complex interplay of candidate profiles, party strategies, and voter sentiments that continue to shape India's capital's political future.
