BJP Slams TMC: Jawhar Sircar's Letter Exposes Corruption Under Mamata Banerjee

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp criticism of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday, following a letter written by TMC Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In the letter, Sircar expressed his disillusionment with the party's leadership and handling of corruption, particularly in the aftermath of a recent high-profile rape and murder case in Kolkata, as reported by Hindustan Times.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla seized on Sircar's letter, claiming it exposed the "dirt, corruption, and dictatorial attitude" within the TMC, adding that "TMC stands for 'Too Much Corruption.'" He further accused Mamata Banerjee's government of corroding every institution in West Bengal with corruption.

TMC MP's Criticism of the Government

In his letter to Mamata Banerjee, Sircar, a retired bureaucrat and member of the Rajya Sabha, revealed his intention to resign from Parliament and quit politics. He cited frustration with the pervasive corruption within the TMC and its mishandling of the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The scandal, involving former education minister Partha Chatterjee, has sparked widespread public outrage.

Sircar lamented that the government's response to the public anger has been inadequate. "In all my years, I have not seen such angst and total no-confidence against the government," he wrote, highlighting his disappointment with the lack of direct intervention by Mamata Banerjee. He criticized the government for not taking swift action against corrupt officials and doctors involved in the incident, as reported by Hindustan Times.

BJP's Response

Poonawalla stated that Sircar's letter highlights the institutional cover-up by the TMC in the Kolkata rape-murder case. He pointed out that despite the public outcry, the government's priority was not justice for the victim but instead protecting corrupt individuals within the administration. He questioned why Mamata Banerjee continues to shield Kolkata Police Commissioner Sandip Ghose and other top officials, rather than holding them accountable.

The BJP spokesperson further criticized Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for their silence on the issue, asking why they have not visited the victim's family.

Growing Dissent Within TMC

Sircar's resignation letter is seen as a significant blow to the TMC, as it reveals internal dissent within the party ranks. The retired bureaucrat expressed disappointment in how the government handled the protests by junior doctors following the murder. He emphasized that had swift action been taken to address the corruption in the healthcare system, the situation could have been resolved sooner.

"The present spontaneous outpouring of public anger is against the unchecked overbearing attitude of the favoured few and the corrupt," Sircar wrote, adding that the suspension of doctors and health officials was "too little, too late."

The Fallout

As Mamata Banerjee's government faces mounting criticism over its handling of corruption and law and order, Sircar's letter may further intensify the political tension in West Bengal. The BJP continues to accuse the TMC of rampant corruption and authoritarianism, while the TMC grapples with internal discord and public discontent, as per media reports.

The growing dissatisfaction within the TMC could have significant political implications as West Bengal prepares for future elections, with both the BJP and Congress poised to capitalize on the turmoil within the ruling party.
