BJP Unveils Unexpected Candidate List for West Bengal's Lok Sabha Elections

In a surprising move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its latest list of Lok Sabha candidates for West Bengal, introducing fresh faces and reshuffling existing MPs to new constituencies. Among the notable nominations is Rekha Patra, a housewife from Sandeshkhali, chosen for the Basirhat seat. This decision marks a significant stance by the BJP, highlighting its support for the women of Sandeshkhali and West Bengal amidst reports of violence and intimidation in the region.

BJPs Surprising West Bengal Candidates

Former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Ganguly has been nominated from the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, indicating the party's confidence in new entrants to strengthen its position in West Bengal. The list also includes Arjun Singh, who has been re-nominated for the Barrackpore seat after returning to the BJP from the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The BJP's strategic candidate placements have stirred discussions, especially with the relocation of its former state chief Dilip Ghosh from the Medinipur seat to Bardhaman-Durgapur and former Union minister Debasree Chowdhury from Raiganj to South Kolkata. These changes reflect the party's tactical approach to contesting strongholds of political adversaries, including those of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Rekha Patra's nomination from Basirhat has been particularly highlighted by Amit Malviya, the party's West Bengal co-in-charge. Malviya's statement on X underscores the BJP's commitment to addressing the grievances of women affected by violence in Sandeshkhali. The arrest last month of Shajahan Sheikh, a TMC leader implicated in assault and land grab charges in Sandeshkhali, adds context to this nomination.

Further surprises came with the announcement of candidates for other key constituencies. Raju Bista's re-nomination for Darjeeling has sparked discontent among local party members seeking representation from within the community. Meanwhile, new entrants like former TMC leader Tapas Ray and Amrita Roy from the royal family of Krishnanagar have been given tickets for Kolkata North and Krishnanagar seats, respectively.

The BJP's candidate list has elicited mixed reactions from political circles. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh expressed astonishment at both the delay in releasing the full candidate list and the decision to shift Dilip Ghosh to Bardhaman-Durgapur. This move has been perceived as a significant reshuffle within the BJP, reflecting its strategic considerations ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

With 19 candidates announced in this latest list, bringing the total to 38 nominees for West Bengal, the BJP aims to make a strong impact in a state that sends 42 MPs to the Lok Sabha. The party's choices reflect a blend of strategic positioning and support for individuals affected by political violence, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral battle in West Bengal.
